Having grown up on a farm and living through the Great Depression, Grandmother and Granddaddy never threw leftovers out. The extra food was either put in a soup pot or taken to the Gracey farm for the hogs. Grandmother knew that on a cold rainy day or when a child felt bad, the best medicine was good homemade soup and fresh yeast bread. It was also regular fare for Monday ironing days.

Mary Salone Hopson was grandmother's sister. She was also an excellent cook, but even a better seamstress. She put her energy into sewing for a living and was very successful. In the Hopkinsville area, families that could afford the best came to Aunty. She made dresses for my mother and grandmother. But for a profitable career, she opened an upholstery shop; custom making curtains, slip covers, drapes, and bed spreads. She also upholstered furniture.
